Toronto - A home away from home

In September 2023, I had the pleasure of embarking on a personal travel adventure to Toronto. The bustling and diverse metropolis nestled along the shores of Lake Ontario felt so similar to Singapore, and it was nice to be "home away from home".

As the vibrant heart of Canada, Toronto offered a captivating blend of cultures, urban energy, and natural beauty. This is the story of my journey through this dynamic city during the pleasant days of early autumn.

One of the first things that struck me about Toronto was its incredible diversity. The city is a true melting pot, with over 200 nationalities calling it home. My exploration began in Kensington Market, a bohemian neighbourhood known for its eclectic shops, vibrant street art, and delicious food. The streets were lined with stalls selling international cuisine from Jamaican jerk chicken to Vietnamese pho. It was the perfect place to immerse myself in the city's cultural mosaic.

Chinatown, with its colourful storefronts and bustling atmosphere, provided a glimpse into Toronto's Chinese community. The first thing that struck me about Chinatown was its distinct architectural character. The neighbourhood's streets are adorned with traditional red lanterns, ornate arches, and intricate decorative elements that immediately transport you to a different time and place. The visual charm of these architectural elements is a nod to the rich Chinese heritage that thrives within the community. The neighbourhood's architecture not only creates a picturesque backdrop for visitors but also reflects the depth of the Chinese cultural presence in Toronto. It's a delightful blend of the old world and the new, where historic buildings coexist with modern structures, and the streets resonate with a timeless ambiance.

Chinatown is not just a destination for food; it's also a vibrant marketplace filled with an array of treasures. The streets were lined with stalls selling exotic fruits and vegetables, exotic herbs and spices, and a variety of goods, from colourful textiles to traditional Chinese ceramics. The marketplace provided a glimpse into the daily life of the neighbourhood's residents and offered an opportunity to interact with the local community. The friendly vendors and the array of products on display were a testament to the warmth and openness that define Chinatown. I enjoyed a steaming bowl of authentic dim sum of cheong fun, a Cantonese tradition that perfectly exemplified Toronto's culinary diversity. I also headed for a traditional Chinese medicine massage to ease my knots and aches after being on the road for more than a month.

One of the most delightful surprises of my trip to Toronto was the opportunity to see the famous Rubber Duck, an iconic art installation that has made appearances in cities worldwide. The giant inflatable rubber duck, designed by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, was floating in Toronto's Harbourfront Centre. This whimsical creation brought joy to both locals and tourists, and I couldn't resist taking a boat tour to get a closer look at the oversized, cheerful duck that graced the city's waterfront.

Toronto's urban landscape seamlessly transitions into nature, and I decided to escape the city's hustle and bustle by heading to the Toronto Islands. A short ferry ride brought me to a serene archipelago, where I discovered a pristine environment that felt a world away from the urban jungle.

No visit to Toronto is complete without admiring its iconic skyline. I ventured to view the most recognisable CN Tower from the harbour. As I ascended in a glass elevator to the tower's observation deck, the cityscape unfurled before me. The view was nothing short of breathtaking, with the sprawling city below and Lake Ontario stretching out to the horizon.

My architectural exploration also led me to the Distillery District, a historic area now known for its vibrant arts scene and stylish boutiques. The district's cobblestone streets and well-preserved industrial architecture provided a striking backdrop for my urban wanderings.

Toronto's food and bar scene was a delightful journey of its own. The city's diversity shone through in its culinary offerings. I indulged in mouthwatering dishes from around the world, from Persian kebabs in North York to authentic Japanese ramen in the trendy Queen Street West neighbourhood.

I also tasted some of the most delicious ice creams in the city, and I went for repeated visits for the guilty pleasure.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Toronto's nightlife came to life, offering a diverse array of bars, clubs, and entertainment venues. The city's bar scene is a reflection of its dynamic and cosmopolitan character, where every evening promises a new adventure.

The Entertainment District was a hub of activity, with neon signs illuminating the streets and live music venues beckoning to passersby. I enjoyed a night of laughter at the Second City Comedy Club, where talented comedians had the audience in stitches. It was a wonderful blend of humour and camaraderie, and it showcased Toronto's thriving comedy culture.

Toronto's bars are known for their innovation and dedication to mixology, making the city a hotspot for those who appreciate finely crafted cocktails. I had the pleasure of exploring a cocktail bar in the Distillery District, where expert mixologists transformed drinks into works of art.

The cocktails were not just libations; they were culinary experiences. At Ace Hotel, I tried a concoction that combined locally sourced gin, elderflower liqueur, and a hint of lavender, creating a refreshing and aromatic drink that danced on the palate. Each sip was an invitation to explore the artistry of mixology and the city's commitment to pushing the boundaries of cocktail culture. At Writer's Bar, I tried a variation of Whiskey Sour and was, again, pleasantly surprised.

This journey through Toronto was an immersive experience into a city that seamlessly weaves together cultures, nature, and urban life. The multicultural neighbourhoods, world-class museums, urban escapes, and culinary delights left an indelible mark on my heart. Toronto's diverse tapestry, welcoming spirit, and vibrant atmosphere ensure that there's always more to discover and enjoy in this dynamic city. As I bid farewell to Toronto, I carried with me a treasure trove of memories, a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity, and a desire to return and explore even further. Toronto, with its captivating energy, remains a place where each visit feels like a fresh adventure.

Montreal: New and Old

Montreal, the vibrant and multicultural gem of Quebec, beckoned to me as a city of diverse cultures, rich history, and an unmistakable French influence. In the summer of 2023, I embarked on a work and personal travel adventure to this Canadian metropolis, ready to immerse myself in its unique blend of traditions, arts, and cuisine.

Upon arriving in Montreal, it was immediately clear that this city thrives on its multicultural identity. French is the official language, but English is widely spoken, and a tapestry of other languages, including Spanish, Arabic, and Italian, can be heard in the lively streets. This linguistic diversity mirrors the city's cultural richness.

Exploring neighbourhoods like the Plateau-Mont-Royal and Mile End, I encountered a kaleidoscope of cultures. Quaint European-style cafes coexisted with hipster boutiques, and multicultural restaurants offered culinary delights from around the world. One evening, I dined at a cozy Lebanese restaurant, savouring dishes bursting with flavours I'd remember from my trip to Lebanon (but that's another story from another time).

To delve into Montreal's history, I ventured to Old Montreal, a district that felt like stepping back in time. Cobblestone streets, centuries-old architecture, and horse-drawn carriages painted a vivid picture of the city's heritage. Visiting the Notre-Dame Basilica even from the outside, I was awestruck by its Gothic Revival beauty. The intricate woodwork and striking stained glass windows bathed the interior in a captivating play of light and color. A moment of quiet reflection in this breathtaking sanctuary was a memorable part of my journey.

Montreal's artistic scene captivated me at every turn. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts showcased a vast collection of Canadian and international art, including works by Group of Seven painters and renowned artists like Marc Chagall. The contemporary art section, with its thought-provoking installations, offered a glimpse into the city's avant-garde spirit. Exploring the streets, I discovered an outdoor gallery of murals that graced the Plateau-Mont-Royal district. These vibrant and often politically charged artworks, painted by local and international artists, transformed the neighborhood into an open-air art exhibition. Each mural seemed to tell a story, adding a layer of cultural depth to the city.

Montreal's culinary scene was a journey of gastronomic delights. Of course, I couldn't leave without savouring a classic Montreal-style bagel, which I enjoyed at St-Viateur Bagel, where they've been crafting these delicious creations for over six decades. Poutine, a beloved Canadian dish, unfortunately didn't become a personal favourite. I tried various versions, each with its own twist, but the traditional recipe of crispy fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds was a standout. Schwartz's Deli introduced me to Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, a savoury treat that left me craving for more.

Nestled within the city, Mount Royal provided an urban escape that showcased Montreal's commitment to green spaces. A hike to the summit revealed panoramic views of the city and the St. Lawrence River. The serene atmosphere was a stark contrast to the bustling streets below, offering a moment of tranquility in the heart of Montreal. My journey to this picturesque mountain in the heart of the city was a refreshing escape into a world of lush greenery, serene trails, and breathtaking vistas. One of the first things I noticed as I began my ascent up Mount Royal was the immediate shift in ambiance. The city's noise gradually gave way to the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. The air seemed fresher, and a sense of tranquility enveloped me. As I meandered along the trails, I couldn't help but notice the vibrant greenery that surrounded me. Dense stands of maple, oak, and pine trees painted a picturesque landscape that felt far removed from the urban jungle just below.

One of the highlights of my hike was reaching the Chalet du Mont Royal, a charming stone building perched atop the mountain. This iconic structure not only provides shelter and restrooms for visitors but also boasts a magnificent terrace offering sweeping views of Montreal's skyline. The panoramic vista was nothing short of breathtaking, and I marvelled at the juxtaposition of the city's modern architecture against the backdrop of nature's splendour. The view from the Chalet du Mont Royal was particularly enchanting during my visit. My visit to Mount Royal was not just a hike; it was an immersion into a natural sanctuary nestled within the heart of Montreal. It also made me miss Singapore with its greenery.

I will continue to document my adventures in Montreal as I spend more time in the captivating city.

Another wedding in India

I remember the last time I was in Kolkata, India for a wedding.

Kolkata beckoned with its literary legacy and artistic spirit. Walking the same streets as Rabindranath Tagore and visiting the iconic Victoria Memorial felt like stepping into the pages of history. The city's fervor during Durga Puja, with its elaborately adorned pandals and artistic sculptures, was a visual spectacle. The simplicity of enjoying a cup of chai at a roadside stall and savoring the quintessential Kolkata street food, like phuchka and kathi rolls, created moments of sheer delight.

And then the wedding itself..

A traditional Bengali wedding was a truly enchanting experience. The vibrant and colourful celebrations were a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region. The wedding began with the Gaye Holud ceremony, where turmeric paste was applied to the bride and groom's skin as a symbol of blessings and purification. The air was filled with joyous laughter and traditional songs, creating an atmosphere of merriment.

The main wedding ceremony, or "Bou Bhat," took place with intricate rituals and a grand feast that featured a delectable array of Bengali cuisine, including mouthwatering sweets like rasgulla and sandesh. The ornate attire, elaborate jewelry, and the warm hospitality made the wedding in Kolkata an unforgettable celebration of love and culture, leaving me with cherished memories of this cultural extravaganza.

The ceremony was a fascinating blend of customs, from the sacred "Saat Paak," where the bride walked around the groom seven times, signifying their union for seven lifetimes, to the exchange of garlands and the recitation of hymns.

The wedding in Kolkata was not just a union of two souls but also a celebration of the vibrant Bengali culture. The ornate attire, the intricate jewelry, the heartfelt rituals, and the undeniable sense of togetherness made this event a cherished memory that I carry with me for a lifetime. It was a beautiful reminder of the enduring traditions that connect people, and I felt privileged to have been invited by friends to be part of this wonderful experience.

I am looking forward to a wedding trip to Hyderabad soon. It won't be my first time to the city and I hope it won't be the last!

A subpar Swiss Air business class experience

In the world of air travel, Business Class is often associated with luxury, comfort, and exceptional service. However, my recent personal travel experience with Swiss Air in Business Class left me with a bitter taste of disappointment and frustration. What should have been a premium journey turned out to be a subpar experience that fell short of my expectations.

The first indication that this journey might not live up to the anticipated standard was the seating arrangement. While Business Class usually boasts spacious and comfortable seats that can recline into fully flat beds, the seats on my Swiss Air flight were noticeably cramped. The legroom was limited, and even though I could recline my seat, it didn't offer the level of comfort I expected from a Business Class experience. For a long-haul flight, this was a significant letdown. I swear I could almost hear the passenger breathing next to me.

Another aspect that contributed to my subpar experience was the in-flight entertainment system. In Business Class, passengers anticipate a wide selection of movies, TV shows, and music to keep them entertained throughout the journey. However, the choices on this particular Swiss Air flight were surprisingly limited. The movie selection was outdated, and many of the options were films I had already seen. This lack of variety made the long flight feel even longer, as I struggled to find entertainment that piqued my interest.

One of the hallmarks of a premium Business Class experience is attentive and personalised service. Regrettably, the service on my Swiss Air flight fell short of these expectations. While the flight attendants were polite, their level of attentiveness left much to be desired. There were lengthy delays in attending to passengers' needs, and it often felt like I had to repeatedly request assistance for even basic requests. For travelers in Business Class who pay a premium for superior service, this lapse in attentiveness was a significant disappointment.

Dining is a crucial component of the Business Class experience, and I had looked forward to savouring gourmet meals during my flight. However, the dining experience on my Swiss Air flight was underwhelming. The menu lacked variety, and the quality of the food was mediocre at best. The presentation of the meals also left much to be desired, as the dishes looked unappetising and lacked the finesse one would expect in Business Class. Also, I was told a meal choice was not available, available, and again, not available, all within a span of 20 mins, leaving me frustrated and disappointed. For an airline with a reputation for Swiss precision and quality, this culinary experience was a letdown.

My personal travel experience with Swiss Air in Business Class left me disillusioned and disheartened. Instead of the luxury, comfort, and exceptional service that are synonymous with Business Class travel, I encountered cramped seating, limited entertainment options, inattentive service, and underwhelming dining. This journey was a stark departure from the excellence that should define the premium travel experience.

Let this be a warning to anyone of you who is paying good money for a underwhelming experience.

Port of Porto

So I went back to Porto as the start of my digital nomad journey. Again, it's been a while since I last visited, I decided to put on my tourist hat.

My journey through Porto began with a visit to its historic heart, Ribeira. The colourful houses stacked along narrow cobblestone streets created a postcard-perfect scene. Wandering through this UNESCO World Heritage-listed neighbourhood, I felt like I had stepped back in time. I explored the many small family-owned shops, traditional taverns, and centuries-old churches.

One of the architectural gems of Porto is the Livraria Lello, a magnificent bookstore renowned for its neo-Gothic façade and an interior that seems plucked from the pages of a fairytale. As I climbed the iconic red staircase, I marvelled at the intricate design and stained glass that bathed the space in a warm, ethereal glow.

Porto's cultural offerings extend beyond its historic streets. The Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Fundação de Serralves is a haven for contemporary art enthusiasts. The museum's modern architecture and beautiful gardens served as a serene backdrop for its thought-provoking exhibitions. Porto's rich tradition of azulejos (decorative ceramic tiles) is celebrated at the Museu Nacional do Azulejo. Here, I delved into the history and craftsmanship behind these iconic Portuguese tiles. The intricate patterns and vivid colours that adorned the exhibits left me in awe of this traditional art form.

The Douro River, often referred to as the "River of Gold," is the lifeblood of Porto. A cruise along its meandering waters revealed terraced vineyards that produce the world-famous Port wine. The vine-covered slopes stretched as far as the eye could see, creating a mesmerizing landscape that felt like a work of art. A visit to a local winery provided insight into the art of winemaking. I learned about the meticulous process behind the production of Port wine and savoured its rich flavours during a tasting session. The combination of breathtaking scenery and exquisite wine is something I'd highly recommend to all.

Porto is a haven for food enthusiasts, and I indulged in a gastronomic odyssey. One evening, I dined at a traditional tasca, where I sampled petiscos (Portuguese tapas) like codfish fritters and sautéed chorizo. A visit to the Mercado do Bolhão, Porto's bustling market, was a sensory delight. The market's stalls were brimming with fresh seafood, artisanal cheeses, and colorful produce. I couldn't resist trying the famous Francesinha sandwich, a hearty local specialty smothered in a rich sauce. I didn't like it much previously but have a different take on it this time.

Porto takes on a magical aura as the sun sets and the city lights begin to twinkle. The Dom Luís I Bridge, an iconic double-deck iron bridge, provides the perfect vantage point for me to view a picturesque sunset over the Douro River. Watching the sky transform into a canvas of pinks and oranges was a serene moment of reflection.

From its historic neighbourhoods and cultural enclaves to its culinary delights and serene river landscapes, Porto had left an indelible mark on my heart. I am looking forward to be back in Oct!

The many festivals of London

This June, I had the privilege of experiencing London's dynamic festival scene firsthand. The city, always a hub of cultural diversity and innovation, came alive with a kaleidoscope of events and celebrations that left an indelible mark on my travel diary. From food festivals to music extravaganzas, London in June was a treasure trove of vibrant experiences!

My gastronomic journey into London's festival culture began with "Taste of London," a culinary extravaganza held in Regent's Park. The lush greenery of the park provided a stunning backdrop for this epicurean delight. As I strolled through the festival, my senses were tantalised by a myriad of aromas, flavours, and colours.

The festival showcased some of the city's finest restaurants and chefs, offering a delightful journey through diverse cuisines. From Michelin-starred establishments to street food vendors, each stall presented a unique culinary experience. I savoured exquisite dishes that ranged from gourmet delights to fusion creations, each expertly prepared and presented.

One highlight was a seafood ceviche that transported me to the coastal shores of South America. Another was the delectable aroma of wood-fired pizza from a traditional Italian pizzeria. The joy of watching skilled chefs at work, creating culinary masterpieces before my eyes, was a visual feast in itself.

The festival wasn't just about food; it celebrated the art of mixology with cocktail masterclasses and tastings. Sipping on craft cocktails, I marveled at the creativity and craftsmanship of London's mixologists.

Beyond the gastronomic delights, "Taste of London" was a vibrant gathering of food enthusiasts, creating an atmosphere of conviviality and shared passion. The live music, cooking demonstrations, and interactive workshops added depth to the experience. I attended a cooking demonstration by a renowned chef who shared culinary tips and tricks, providing insights into the artistry behind the dishes.

The festival also featured a bustling market where artisanal producers showcased their products. From handcrafted chocolates to small-batch cheeses, the market was a treasure trove of gourmet delights. Engaging with the producers and learning about their craft added a personal touch to the festival experience.

In many ways, "Taste of London" was a celebration of London's rich culinary heritage. It showcased the city's position as a global food capital, highlighting its diverse food scene and the innovative spirit of its chefs. The festival was also a testament to the power of food to bring people together, fostering a sense of community and shared appreciation for culinary excellence. Food truly brings people together.

In the last days of June, I had the privilege of participating in the London Pride Festival, a celebration of LGBTQ+ rights and the spirit of love and inclusivity. This vibrant and colourful event spanned two weeks and featured a multitude of activities, culminating in the iconic Pride Parade.

The Pride Parade was a dazzling display of diversity, unity, and self-expression. Colourful floats, each representing different LGBTQ+ organizations and causes, glided through the streets. Participants donned vibrant costumes, waved rainbow flags, and danced to the rhythm of music that echoed throughout the city.

The atmosphere was electric, with a palpable sense of joy and acceptance. People from all walks of life came together to support and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Allies and advocates joined the festivities, making it a true testament to the city's commitment to equality.

Trafalgar Square served as the epicenter of the festival, hosting live performances, speeches, and a bustling market of LGBTQ+ organisations and businesses. It was here that I witnessed moving speeches from activists, artists, and community leaders who shared their stories of resilience and hope. Their words served as a powerful reminder of the progress made in LGBTQ+ rights and the ongoing work needed to create a more inclusive society.

Throughout the festival, art installations and exhibitions celebrated LGBTQ+ culture and history. I visited an exhibit that showcased the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to art, literature, and social movements. It was an enlightening experience that highlighted the profound impact of LGBTQ+ individuals on the world.

The festival also featured live music performances, with artists from the LGBTQ+ community taking the stage to entertain and inspire. The music ranged from powerful ballads to upbeat pop anthems, creating a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere.

The Pride Parade, the festival's crowning moment, was a spectacle of love and unity. It was a colorful procession that wound its way through the heart of London, drawing crowds of supporters and onlookers. The parade featured a diverse array of floats, each expressing a unique message of love, acceptance, and empowerment.

One of the most moving aspects of the parade was the presence of LGBTQ+ elders who had witnessed the evolution of LGBTQ+ rights over the years. Their participation was a testament to the progress made and the importance of intergenerational dialogue within the community.

The festival was a poignant reminder of the power of community and the significance of visibility. It celebrated love in all its forms and showcased London's dedication to fostering an environment of acceptance and understanding. As a POC, I can understand and appreciate how this visibility and understanding matters but I shall not get sentimental here. Let's just celebrate Love is Love!

It's been a while, London

The last time I was in London was BC (before Covid). As I touched down at Heathrow Airport, the anticipation of exploring this iconic city this June filled me with excitement. The city unveiled itself in all its splendour. The summer sun bathed the streets in a warm, inviting glow, and the promise of unforgettable experiences, with a multitude of attractions and festivals to explore.

With an itinerary filled with attractions and festivals, I was ready for unforgettable experiences as I reimagine myself as a born-again tourist in this lovely city again.

My London adventure kicked off with a visit to Buckingham Palace. I marveled at the architectural grandeur of the palace and explored the beautiful St. James's Park nearby, where I enjoyed a leisurely stroll amid the lush greenery and serene lakes I also couldn't resist the allure of Hyde Park, where picnics and sunbathing seemed to be the order of the day. As the sun dipped below the horizon, live music and impromptu performances from local artists added to the park's magical atmosphere.

A quintessential London experience awaited as I embarked on a leisurely cruise along the River Thames to Greenwich area. Sailing beneath the majestic Tower Bridge, I admire from a distance at the Shard's glistening spire and the London Eye's slowly rotating capsules. The cruise provided a unique perspective of the city's skyline, offering breathtaking views of iconic landmarks from the water.

London's cultural scene was a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. The National Portrait Gallery was my favourite stop, where I immersed myself in a stunning collection of portraits spanning centuries of British history. From kings and queens to literary giants and cultural icons, the gallery provided a unique glimpse into the faces that shaped the nation's story. Each portrait seemed to come alive with stories and personalities, making it a truly enriching experience.

I also paid a visit to the Tate Modern where two ground-breaking figures in modern art, Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian, were exhibited together. It's a rather mesmerising journey through the pioneering works of the visionary artists. Af Klint's abstract, spiritually inspired creations radiate with vibrant, mystical energy, challenging conventional artistic norms. In contrast, Mondrian's iconic geometric compositions exude an elegant simplicity, embodying the principles of De Stijl movement. This juxtaposition offers a profound exploration of abstraction's diverse facets, inviting us to contemplate the evolution of art in the early 20th century. It truly is a captivating experience that transcends artistic boundaries and ignites the imagination.

No trip to London is complete with a few good shows at the West End. Some highlights are "The Book of Mormon," "Six," and "Hamilton". ""The Book of Mormon," a comedic masterpiece, left an indelible mark on my memory. Created by the brilliant minds behind "South Park," the show pushed the boundaries of dark humour and social satire with an audacity that was both refreshing and uproarious. It had everyone and I in fits of laughter, challenging societal norms and conventions while delivering impeccable comedic timing. The irreverent humour was bold, unapologetic, and, above all, uproariously funny. It was a theatrical experience that had me laughing so hard that my sides ached, and the infectious humour stayed with me long after the curtains fell. I can definitely understand now why this show is a worldwide phenomenon.

"Six" offered a unique and empowering perspective on history. This electrifying musical reimagined the six wives of Henry VIII as pop divas, each with her own story to tell. The performances were nothing short of exceptional, with powerful vocals and dynamic choreography. The catchy tunes had me tapping my feet and dancing in my seat. "Six" was a clever fusion of historical facts and modern pop culture that not only entertained but also educational. It was a testament to the resilience and strength of these historical women, giving them a voice and identity that resonated with contemporary audiences. And don't get me started with the beautiful costumes that are both so rich and sexy.

Then there was "Hamilton," a theatrical tour de force that lived up to every ounce of its immense hype. Lin-Manuel Miranda's ingenious storytelling and masterful lyrics transported me to the heart of the American Revolution. The intricate wordplay, dynamic choreography, and unforgettable ballads were nothing short of mesmerising. The cast's exceptional performances brought historical figures to life in a way that felt incredibly relevant and relatable. It is no doubt a cultural phenomenon that seamlessly blended history and hip-hop, leaving me in awe of its brilliance.

There was so much more about London but I'll have to leave it to another post.
