Upon arriving in Montreal, it was immediately clear that this city thrives on its multicultural identity. French is the official language, but English is widely spoken, and a tapestry of other languages, including Spanish, Arabic, and Italian, can be heard in the lively streets. This linguistic diversity mirrors the city's cultural richness.
Exploring neighbourhoods like the Plateau-Mont-Royal and Mile End, I encountered a kaleidoscope of cultures. Quaint European-style cafes coexisted with hipster boutiques, and multicultural restaurants offered culinary delights from around the world. One evening, I dined at a cozy Lebanese restaurant, savouring dishes bursting with flavours I'd remember from my trip to Lebanon (but that's another story from another time).
To delve into Montreal's history, I ventured to Old Montreal, a district that felt like stepping back in time. Cobblestone streets, centuries-old architecture, and horse-drawn carriages painted a vivid picture of the city's heritage. Visiting the Notre-Dame Basilica even from the outside, I was awestruck by its Gothic Revival beauty. The intricate woodwork and striking stained glass windows bathed the interior in a captivating play of light and color. A moment of quiet reflection in this breathtaking sanctuary was a memorable part of my journey.
Montreal's artistic scene captivated me at every turn. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts showcased a vast collection of Canadian and international art, including works by Group of Seven painters and renowned artists like Marc Chagall. The contemporary art section, with its thought-provoking installations, offered a glimpse into the city's avant-garde spirit. Exploring the streets, I discovered an outdoor gallery of murals that graced the Plateau-Mont-Royal district. These vibrant and often politically charged artworks, painted by local and international artists, transformed the neighborhood into an open-air art exhibition. Each mural seemed to tell a story, adding a layer of cultural depth to the city.
Montreal's culinary scene was a journey of gastronomic delights. Of course, I couldn't leave without savouring a classic Montreal-style bagel, which I enjoyed at St-Viateur Bagel, where they've been crafting these delicious creations for over six decades. Poutine, a beloved Canadian dish, unfortunately didn't become a personal favourite. I tried various versions, each with its own twist, but the traditional recipe of crispy fries smothered in gravy and cheese curds was a standout. Schwartz's Deli introduced me to Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, a savoury treat that left me craving for more.
Nestled within the city, Mount Royal provided an urban escape that showcased Montreal's commitment to green spaces. A hike to the summit revealed panoramic views of the city and the St. Lawrence River. The serene atmosphere was a stark contrast to the bustling streets below, offering a moment of tranquility in the heart of Montreal. My journey to this picturesque mountain in the heart of the city was a refreshing escape into a world of lush greenery, serene trails, and breathtaking vistas. One of the first things I noticed as I began my ascent up Mount Royal was the immediate shift in ambiance. The city's noise gradually gave way to the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. The air seemed fresher, and a sense of tranquility enveloped me. As I meandered along the trails, I couldn't help but notice the vibrant greenery that surrounded me. Dense stands of maple, oak, and pine trees painted a picturesque landscape that felt far removed from the urban jungle just below.
One of the highlights of my hike was reaching the Chalet du Mont Royal, a charming stone building perched atop the mountain. My visit to Mount Royal was not just a hike; it was an immersion into a natural sanctuary nestled within the heart of Montreal. It also made me miss Singapore with its greenery.
