It's been a while, London

The last time I was in London was BC (before Covid). As I touched down at Heathrow Airport, the anticipation of exploring this iconic city this June filled me with excitement. The city unveiled itself in all its splendour. The summer sun bathed the streets in a warm, inviting glow, and the promise of unforgettable experiences, with a multitude of attractions and festivals to explore.

With an itinerary filled with attractions and festivals, I was ready for unforgettable experiences as I reimagine myself as a born-again tourist in this lovely city again.

My London adventure kicked off with a visit to Buckingham Palace. I marveled at the architectural grandeur of the palace and explored the beautiful St. James's Park nearby, where I enjoyed a leisurely stroll amid the lush greenery and serene lakes I also couldn't resist the allure of Hyde Park, where picnics and sunbathing seemed to be the order of the day. As the sun dipped below the horizon, live music and impromptu performances from local artists added to the park's magical atmosphere.

A quintessential London experience awaited as I embarked on a leisurely cruise along the River Thames to Greenwich area. Sailing beneath the majestic Tower Bridge, I admire from a distance at the Shard's glistening spire and the London Eye's slowly rotating capsules. The cruise provided a unique perspective of the city's skyline, offering breathtaking views of iconic landmarks from the water.

London's cultural scene was a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. The National Portrait Gallery was my favourite stop, where I immersed myself in a stunning collection of portraits spanning centuries of British history. From kings and queens to literary giants and cultural icons, the gallery provided a unique glimpse into the faces that shaped the nation's story. Each portrait seemed to come alive with stories and personalities, making it a truly enriching experience.

I also paid a visit to the Tate Modern where two ground-breaking figures in modern art, Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian, were exhibited together. It's a rather mesmerising journey through the pioneering works of the visionary artists. Af Klint's abstract, spiritually inspired creations radiate with vibrant, mystical energy, challenging conventional artistic norms. In contrast, Mondrian's iconic geometric compositions exude an elegant simplicity, embodying the principles of De Stijl movement. This juxtaposition offers a profound exploration of abstraction's diverse facets, inviting us to contemplate the evolution of art in the early 20th century. It truly is a captivating experience that transcends artistic boundaries and ignites the imagination.

No trip to London is complete with a few good shows at the West End. Some highlights are "The Book of Mormon," "Six," and "Hamilton". ""The Book of Mormon," a comedic masterpiece, left an indelible mark on my memory. Created by the brilliant minds behind "South Park," the show pushed the boundaries of dark humour and social satire with an audacity that was both refreshing and uproarious. It had everyone and I in fits of laughter, challenging societal norms and conventions while delivering impeccable comedic timing. The irreverent humour was bold, unapologetic, and, above all, uproariously funny. It was a theatrical experience that had me laughing so hard that my sides ached, and the infectious humour stayed with me long after the curtains fell. I can definitely understand now why this show is a worldwide phenomenon.

"Six" offered a unique and empowering perspective on history. This electrifying musical reimagined the six wives of Henry VIII as pop divas, each with her own story to tell. The performances were nothing short of exceptional, with powerful vocals and dynamic choreography. The catchy tunes had me tapping my feet and dancing in my seat. "Six" was a clever fusion of historical facts and modern pop culture that not only entertained but also educational. It was a testament to the resilience and strength of these historical women, giving them a voice and identity that resonated with contemporary audiences. And don't get me started with the beautiful costumes that are both so rich and sexy.

Then there was "Hamilton," a theatrical tour de force that lived up to every ounce of its immense hype. Lin-Manuel Miranda's ingenious storytelling and masterful lyrics transported me to the heart of the American Revolution. The intricate wordplay, dynamic choreography, and unforgettable ballads were nothing short of mesmerising. The cast's exceptional performances brought historical figures to life in a way that felt incredibly relevant and relatable. It is no doubt a cultural phenomenon that seamlessly blended history and hip-hop, leaving me in awe of its brilliance.

There was so much more about London but I'll have to leave it to another post.
