Port of Porto

So I went back to Porto as the start of my digital nomad journey. Again, it's been a while since I last visited, I decided to put on my tourist hat.

My journey through Porto began with a visit to its historic heart, Ribeira. The colourful houses stacked along narrow cobblestone streets created a postcard-perfect scene. Wandering through this UNESCO World Heritage-listed neighbourhood, I felt like I had stepped back in time. I explored the many small family-owned shops, traditional taverns, and centuries-old churches.

One of the architectural gems of Porto is the Livraria Lello, a magnificent bookstore renowned for its neo-Gothic façade and an interior that seems plucked from the pages of a fairytale. As I climbed the iconic red staircase, I marvelled at the intricate design and stained glass that bathed the space in a warm, ethereal glow.

Porto's cultural offerings extend beyond its historic streets. The Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Fundação de Serralves is a haven for contemporary art enthusiasts. The museum's modern architecture and beautiful gardens served as a serene backdrop for its thought-provoking exhibitions. Porto's rich tradition of azulejos (decorative ceramic tiles) is celebrated at the Museu Nacional do Azulejo. Here, I delved into the history and craftsmanship behind these iconic Portuguese tiles. The intricate patterns and vivid colours that adorned the exhibits left me in awe of this traditional art form.

The Douro River, often referred to as the "River of Gold," is the lifeblood of Porto. A cruise along its meandering waters revealed terraced vineyards that produce the world-famous Port wine. The vine-covered slopes stretched as far as the eye could see, creating a mesmerizing landscape that felt like a work of art. A visit to a local winery provided insight into the art of winemaking. I learned about the meticulous process behind the production of Port wine and savoured its rich flavours during a tasting session. The combination of breathtaking scenery and exquisite wine is something I'd highly recommend to all.

Porto is a haven for food enthusiasts, and I indulged in a gastronomic odyssey. One evening, I dined at a traditional tasca, where I sampled petiscos (Portuguese tapas) like codfish fritters and sautéed chorizo. A visit to the Mercado do Bolhão, Porto's bustling market, was a sensory delight. The market's stalls were brimming with fresh seafood, artisanal cheeses, and colorful produce. I couldn't resist trying the famous Francesinha sandwich, a hearty local specialty smothered in a rich sauce. I didn't like it much previously but have a different take on it this time.

Porto takes on a magical aura as the sun sets and the city lights begin to twinkle. The Dom Luís I Bridge, an iconic double-deck iron bridge, provides the perfect vantage point for me to view a picturesque sunset over the Douro River. Watching the sky transform into a canvas of pinks and oranges was a serene moment of reflection.

From its historic neighbourhoods and cultural enclaves to its culinary delights and serene river landscapes, Porto had left an indelible mark on my heart. I am looking forward to be back in Oct!
